2024 Poindexter Village Afrofuturism Poetry Competition

From The Roots Of The Past To The Fruits Of the Future

We invite you to support and participate in the Poindexter Village Afrofuturism Poetry Competition, a city-wide art challenge fostering poetry writing and exploration of the Afrofuturism genre among K-12 students. Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic and philosophy that combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentrism to explore the experiences of people of African descent. This competition provides a historical platform for students to express their thoughts, ideas, and visions of the future through poetry.

Theme: Afrofuturism

Poetry should capture the student's understanding and interpretation of Afrofuturism, rooted in historical experiences. This may encompass themes like technology, space exploration, African culture, history, and speculative visions of the future.
Eligibility: Open to all students enrolled in grades K-12 in Central Ohio.

Each student may submit only one original poem.

Student Entry Form Opens: February 28, 2024

Submission Deadline: Monday, June 24, 2024

Winners Announcement: Monday July 1, 2024

Performance: Saturday, August 3, 2024

Students submitting their work must be prepared to share their poems at the Annual Poindexter  Village Drum Circle on August 3, 2024.

We encourage all K-12 students to participate in this exciting opportunity to explore Afrofuturism through poetry. Let your imagination soar as you envision the future and share your unique perspective with the world.
