Ohio History Connection Mission:
Spark discovery of Ohio’s stories. Embrace the present, share the past and transform the future.
Poindexter Village will become a museum. The Ohio History Connection purchased the remaining buildings from the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority. With help from the James Preston Poindexter Foundation, and the City of Columbus the site will be turned into Central Ohio's premier black history hub.
The Poindexter Village African American Museum will showcase the rich untold story of an African American experience in its neighborhood and beyond in order to nurture, understanding, inspire success, inform action and empower future generations to build the strong, vibrant and just community they want to live in.
Poindexter Village was named in honor of Columbus, Ohio, community leader, Rev. James Poindexter. The village was dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt on Oct. 12, 1940 as one of the nation’s first public housing projects. This community represents the birth and history of public housing in this country and reflects Ohio’s place in the national story of the Great Migration.
Poindexter Village builds on the rich, untold story of an African American experience in its neighborhood and beyond in order to nurture understanding, inspire success, inform action, and empower future generations to build the strong, vibrant, and just communities they want to live in.
Ohio History Connection is proud to announce its partnership with our next-door neighbor, the historic Union Grove Baptist Church. Connected by a shared courtyard, this collaboration strengthens the bond between history and faith, preserving stories that shape this historic community.
